DIRECTIONS

The magic 2  every director has to think about is: 1)  what's in front of the camera    2)  where's the camera positioned.  It's important to read the script and break it down to questions: How? - style, mise-en-scene, mood. Who? - cast, crew, collaborators. Where? - locations, set. What? - production, costume, sound design, editing. Key director moments: How you pesent the character. Where you set the story. How you position the light. How you edit the story (rhythm, tone, mood). For our first Directions unit lecture we had to get into groups and have a go at directing a short scene. I found it to be very difficult to direct my DP instead of handling it myself. I ended up with a lot of spare shots I didn't need or couldn't use (mainly because it was hard to get the ball of paper to land into the bin) but the end result didn't disappoint me.

BLACK MIRROR (contemporary TV show review)

Black Mirror [1] is set in near future where technology is even more advanced than today. Every episode shows a new completely different story line where the only thing uniting them is the dark twist at the second part of the episode. Almost every episode starts with introducing a viewer to some kind of new invention and/or the protagonist of the episode. In most cases the viewer starts thinking that it would be great to have that invention, for example, photographic memory [2] that enables you to rewatch your memories whenever you want to, or maybe block someone from your life entirely [3] . However, by the end of an episode, after seeing the dark twist, the viewer is kind of glad that none of that exists at the moment. The other dark side of the show is that it makes its viewers paranoid about the technology today. After watching few episodes the viewer starts wondering “what if this is being developed today? What if somebody is watching me right now through the camera in ...

MR. BEAN (presentation about a historic TV show)

Because I've only put some bullet points in my slides I'll attach what I've written down for the presentation: "I chose this show because it's the only 'historical' British TV show that I have seen before coming here to UK.  For those who might not know - Mr. Bean is a sitcom that ran from 1990 to 1995. It's created by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis. 'Mr. Bean' is a little bit different from most other sitcoms and overall TV programmes because of the fact that it heavily relays on physical comedy and there's not a lot of dialoge in it. It's not a show that you can watch while cleaning or cooking because yoy simply won't understand what's going on. Although, that's probably why the show has been broadcasted in around 200 countries around the world. Due to the comedy being physical and not narrative nothing has been lost in translation. Despite this cinema trai...

Project evaluation

For something done last minute it isn't the worst, but it could have been better if I haven't put it off.  If I've done this on time, I still could have refilmed some scenes that would have made it better and more believable (the scene in the car).  Script wise I have no idea. Am I proud of it? No, but I give myself points for trying. Is it bad? Probably. Is it a complete dissapointment to me? No, because even if it's really bad, it gave me experience that I didn't have before and even though I never want to write another screenplay again I can learn from my mistakes and hopefully when I have to do something like this again - I'll be better at it. Probably the most important thing I've learned  is that I need to figure out a way to manage my time and don't let things pile up.  As well as while taking out the kit - grab a light, because even if I end up not needing it, I'll have an option to use it and it would make filming way easier. I regret...

2 minute video development

The first cut without the music, titles and colour change. The second cut with music and titles, I tried to do something with the colours but it ended up creating a lot of noise because of dark filming conditions. The final cut, I made the making tea a bit more dynamic by using quick cutting. Sadly I couldn't refilm the scene in the car and couldn't film more street footage and 'Harold' running to make it more believable. I ended up changing the title of the story and the titles overall because the first font didn't look pleasing for my eye.

Contextual research (screenwriting)

It's important to know the anwer to the question "what is it?" Hollywood uses sequels, prequels and reboots to avoid the question and make easy money (pre-sold franchise) Logline is the most important part of a hollywood screenplay Good logline has - Irony -A compelling mental picture -Audience and costs -A killer title.  It has to be about someone. The story has to have one or two main people we can focus our attention on, identify with, and want to root for. Important to know what genre you're wrting. 10 types of movies - Monster in the House(Jaws, Tremors, Alien, The Exorcist, Fatal Attraction, and Panic Room ) - Golden Fleece  (Star Wars; The Wizard of Oz; Planes, Trains and Automobiles; Back To The Future; and most "heist movies." ) -Out of the Bottle ( Liar, Liar; Bruce Almighty; Love Potion ; Freaky Friday; Flubber ) -Dude with a Problem  (The genre that ranges in style, tone, and emotional substance from Breakdown and Die Hard to Titanic ...
