News Research

    20th of September 2018

It starts with the reader reading over the headlines while the BBC's signature news music is playing in the background. Each headline has pictures and some graphics to illustrate them.
Then they play the intro to the programme with even more graphics that are very on brand for BBC (colour red, the globe) and the pictures also illustrate what the programme is about it has businesspeople going somewhere and shots of Canary Wharf that stand for the business segment and etc.
After the intro the reader shows a picture of a plane with misspelled company name and encourages the viewers to share their work failures on social media using a hashtag. This way the news becomes more interractive.
They show the intro one more time to segway into the actual news.
The first story about Brexit gets introduced by the reader who sends us to the package.
Instead of using the video or audio on screen, the reporter reads the quote as it appears on the screen. The package mostly uses a voiceover except for a part where we could hear the Irlands PM voicing his opinion. The reporter uses a kid playing piano at the EU Ausria Summit to ease in and out of the story.
Back at the studio the reader is joined by a guest that comments on the issue. They use a couple of pictures and videos to illustrate who the guest is talking about.
The second strory is also a package. It's mainly a VO with some SOT and quotations to show how people feel about the issue. The package starts with pictures and ends with pictures of Russian athlets.
A few other stories are done as OOVs while the BBC intro music plays in the backgorund.
The following story was a package, it had archive footage, SOT and VO.
After that the reader introduced sports headlines.
The following segment is called 'this week in history' where they look back at events that happend on this week years ago, it's archive footage from the news. That in a way introduces their other story about Spanish Flu as it happened a 100 years ago. The reader introduces us to the story and they starts playing the package, in it theres a VO, we can also see the reporter interviewing a contibuters, archive pictures.
The following story is also a package where the reporter choses to use the plant that cocaine is made from as a start and end point, in the begining he says what it's used for and in the end there's a clip of the President of Columbia saying that he will try to kill as many of the plants as possible.
Then there's sports with a few short packages and OOVs
Afterwards the news reader reminds the viewers about the plane picture and reads out a few stories from the viewers.

Technology News

This show was our main inspiration as it is a British technology news programme and has a semi-formal feel to it.
When I first saw it the first thing that came to my mind was that colour wise it looks very vintage as if someone in the 90's imagined what the future might look like. It has a very warm colour palette (basically all of the colours in the logo) that gives it that feel.
The programme starts like a usual TV news with introducing the audience to the stories by reading the headlines, although it's different because the first time we see presenter is after the intro to the programme and the first story. The aston for the presenter isn't showing his name, it shows his social media handle. The whole programme consists of packages and mostly uses VO's, few peces to camera, SOT's and few interviews. A lot of the footage used is stock footage as well as footage from product comercials.
The main story is covered by the main presenter and the other stories are covered by different reporters.

DIRECTIONS

The magic 2  every director has to think about is: 1)  what's in front of the camera    2)  where's the camera positioned.  It's important to read the script and break it down to questions: How? - style, mise-en-scene, mood. Who? - cast, crew, collaborators. Where? - locations, set. What? - production, costume, sound design, editing. Key director moments: How you pesent the character. Where you set the story. How you position the light. How you edit the story (rhythm, tone, mood). For our first Directions unit lecture we had to get into groups and have a go at directing a short scene. I found it to be very difficult to direct my DP instead of handling it myself. I ended up with a lot of spare shots I didn't need or couldn't use (mainly because it was hard to get the ball of paper to land into the bin) but the end result didn't disappoint me.

Camera workshop (coverage)

In one of our camera workshops we learned about the importance of coverage. It doesn't matter that in the end we won't use all of the footage and maybe even end up using just few shots, it's important to have multiple shots from diferent angles so that we would have options while editing.  During the workshop we had two exercises. One of which was "The Chair": It ended up being pretty short video and I ended up not using half of the footage I got for it. For next exercise we were given scripts and had to interpret it in our own way.  While editing I wished I would have filmed few more close up shots and to have actually filmed the whole scene from fixed camera positions.

Studio Idea

Personally, I found it really difficult to come up with an interesting studio production idea. But because "one idea is not enough" (Brown and Duthie, 2010)  I came up with 3 initial ideas: 1) Guess the song type of game show, but instead of guessing pop songs, the contestants would have to guess classical music. I got this idea from a game my friends and I loved to play and the way my music teacher used to test my class.  2) Travel guide about how to make the most of your trip, places worth visiting and places that are overrated and not worth your time. I got this idea from my sister who travels a lot and from the way she does loads of research about each and every place she visits. 3) Debate/Game show where 2 groups of people debate about nerdy topics ( whats better Marvel or DC, which Doctor was the best etc.). The idea comes from noticing how much rivalry there is between comic book lovers and overall 'nerds'. I feel like this idea is the stronge...
