Evaluation

Personally, I feel like this unit was a lot like our documentary unit which wasn't bad, but as my job in the group was operating the camera, it made it a bit difficult to research on, because it feels like I've done most of it last year. However, I feel like I've gotten better at lighting as this was one of my weak spots, that and holding the shots before and after zooming in/out, which I improved on as well.
I honestly like working in a group more than working alone like in our first 2 units last year as it is easier to share the load of work and everyone can focus on what they have to do for the project. Other than that, I loved working with my group and having Lauren as our director, because I feel like she's really good at communicating what she wants me to do on the shoot.
For the things that went wrong, well first of all we had to re-shoot our 'live', probably partialy because I couldn't be there on the day of our first shoot as we initialy planed on filming on 16th, but couldn't because of the next unit briefing and it was too late for me to reschedule at my work. However, the re-shoot went well and I'm proud of most of the footage from there, although we could have used the tripod for our shot outside of AllGen Gaming to make it look nicer. Another thing from that day was that Michael didn't put his clip mic under his white shirt and because of how hectic we all were on that day, we completely missed it.
Our previous 'fine cut' edit was a lot different than the one we ended up with, as it had a short coverage of our first story and wasn't really a package, while the second story had way more stuff in it. That might have been partially because our contributer (the psychologist) wasn't very relevant to our story, but we managed to get some good soudbites for it. However we didn't have any set up sequence or footage to illustrate what he was saying so later that day, Jess managed to get a hold (with the parent's premission) of some footage of a kid playing a video game that illustrated our story very well. It will be a lesson to not forget to listen what the contributors are saying and illustrate their words with pictures. Other than that I think the end result is pretty nice.

One thing that I would have loved to change was our YouTube logo or banner as, at least in my eyes, they don't go well together (I like them seperatly, but not together). But there was no time for it as we had our re-shoot and re-did the structure of the news.

All in all, I enjoyed this unit and working with my group as everyone knew what they were doing and everyone did their best in each subject, especially given the time we had to do it and that our director was sick for a few weeks. Even though there are some things that could be tweeked, I'm happy with our end result.

DIRECTIONS

The magic 2  every director has to think about is: 1)  what's in front of the camera    2)  where's the camera positioned.  It's important to read the script and break it down to questions: How? - style, mise-en-scene, mood. Who? - cast, crew, collaborators. Where? - locations, set. What? - production, costume, sound design, editing. Key director moments: How you pesent the character. Where you set the story. How you position the light. How you edit the story (rhythm, tone, mood). For our first Directions unit lecture we had to get into groups and have a go at directing a short scene. I found it to be very difficult to direct my DP instead of handling it myself. I ended up with a lot of spare shots I didn't need or couldn't use (mainly because it was hard to get the ball of paper to land into the bin) but the end result didn't disappoint me.

Camera workshop (coverage)

In one of our camera workshops we learned about the importance of coverage. It doesn't matter that in the end we won't use all of the footage and maybe even end up using just few shots, it's important to have multiple shots from diferent angles so that we would have options while editing.  During the workshop we had two exercises. One of which was "The Chair": It ended up being pretty short video and I ended up not using half of the footage I got for it. For next exercise we were given scripts and had to interpret it in our own way.  While editing I wished I would have filmed few more close up shots and to have actually filmed the whole scene from fixed camera positions.

Studio Idea

Personally, I found it really difficult to come up with an interesting studio production idea. But because "one idea is not enough" (Brown and Duthie, 2010)  I came up with 3 initial ideas: 1) Guess the song type of game show, but instead of guessing pop songs, the contestants would have to guess classical music. I got this idea from a game my friends and I loved to play and the way my music teacher used to test my class.  2) Travel guide about how to make the most of your trip, places worth visiting and places that are overrated and not worth your time. I got this idea from my sister who travels a lot and from the way she does loads of research about each and every place she visits. 3) Debate/Game show where 2 groups of people debate about nerdy topics ( whats better Marvel or DC, which Doctor was the best etc.). The idea comes from noticing how much rivalry there is between comic book lovers and overall 'nerds'. I feel like this idea is the stronge...
